Clean beauty is becoming a big thing. So many companies are seeing that consumers want better, safer products. But how do you really know what their bottles say are true? By doing your own research. Or follow me because I do lots of research. Here are a few things to look for when looking at your clean beauty.

Are the ingredients of each product disclosed publicly? What is transparency these days? What does transparency look like? Well, to me it looks like not hiding behind trade-marked words like perfume or fragrance. If you can’t find the ingredients on the bottle or package, you should be able to go to their website and find a full list of ingredients. They should also be explaining why certain ingredients are included or even necessary, like preservatives.

Screening color cosmetics for heavy metals on an ongoing basis. Not every thing that is natural is safe and heavy metals are the perfect example. The colors used in your blush, eye shadow, and lips are often contaminated with heavy metals. Both natural and synthetic derived colors can have this problem. And many mineral “natural” cosmetics contain high levels of heavy metals.

Companies aren’t adding heavy metals, they just aren’t screening for them. And some of the ones that are screening aren’t testing each batch for heavy metals. This is an issue because when new color is pulled from a different part of the earth one batch could be free of heavy metals and the next could have unsafe levels. So make sure the company screens all batches for heavy metals.

Many companies now have their own lists of never used ingredients. That is amazing! Because they are starting to think of their customers. But what is safe is different to different people, the industry is currently making up it’s own standards. Besides just banning ingredients it’s important to know how they screen and test the safety of their ingredients.

There can’t be the assumption that since an ingredient is on the market already that it’s safe. Is the company using scientific literature to back up their safety clams. What kind of standards has the company put in place to go above and beyond? If they can’t define what safety is to them move to a better company.

In general be sure to do the research before buying into a company that claims to be “clean” or “safe.” How we spend our money determines what companies make and sell. Let’s get more companies making cleaner products.
